AGE OF DISCOVERY (7/1/50)
In 1950, James Morris became the first human being to walk in a virtual world. On learning of his mission, Morris chose a name for his pod from the words Ferdinand Magellan spoke to Charles V of Spain 450 years earlier: “God has willed us, Your Highness, to live in an Age of Discovery!” Morris’ actual translocation lasted for only two-and-a-half minutes, but it established once and for all the feasibility of journeys to other worlds. AGE OF DISCOVERY was retired in 1958 after 123 missions.
