PRIVATEER (3/20/37)
Howard Hughes dubbed his pod PRIVATEER because of his roguish ways when it came to social conventions. When Amelia Earhart disappeared in 1937, Hughes flew from Los Angeles to New York in a prototype aircraft to pilot PRIVATEER in a mission to rescue her; in the process, he set a new transcontinental speed record. PRIVATEER I was retired in 1938 after twelve missions.
