FREQUENT FLYER
Lt. Cmdr. Diane Donohue, a Navy test pilot, was accepted along with famed flying ace Jackie Cochran into the NASA Astronaut Program in 1957. Despite three years of superior performance, NASA scientists decided in 1961 that women were unsuited for space travel and she was discharged. The two women then joined the VGL. In 1964, Donohue earned the nickname “Frequent Flyer” by making thirty-seven reconnaissance missions to BattleTech, more than any other VGL pilot. She proudly attached the nickname to her pod, the sister ship of Jackie Cochran’s UNTO THE BREECH.
