Piloting a 'Mech is not merely about moving it around the battlefield. You have to destroy or be destroyed. That's where targeting comes in.
To shoot a target you must move the center of the cross-hairs on to it. Moving the joystick left and right steers the 'Mech left and right therefore moving the cross-hairs accordingly.
Moving the joystick up and down will move the cross-hairs up and down. (see illustration below)
Move so that the cross-hairs sit on another 'Mech or other object and they will turn red to indicate that you have found a target. When the cross-hairs turn red, you know that you can shoot and do damage to that target.
